A Real Mermaid?
First, let’s try to learn a bit more about mermaids. Then, we’ll tell you how the human mind, or imagination if you will, has always given rise to legends and myths, to the point that we believed in them for a long time. Yes, you guessed it: mermaids don’t exist! Today, however, our scientific understanding of this world doesn’t allow us to take part in such stories. But the legend is beautiful and still deserves to be told!

In Greek mythology, it is said that sirens had the head of a woman and the body of a bird. By the Roman era, they had gained arms and breasts, transforming them into winged women. Around the 8th century AD, the English monk Aldhelm described them as having scales on their tails instead of “a maiden’s form.” They became more popular in medieval paintings, where they were depicted either as an old witch or as a beautiful young woman who lured sailors with her beauty. By the 15th century AD, there was no significant difference between these representations, but long golden hair flowed from the fish tail of this pearly-scaled creature. You can explore more about these creatures in the book we found for you, “The Sea of Monsters” by Rick Riordan.
Do Mermaids Exist?
No, of course not. We have known this for a short period—about 300 years. Everyone was once convinced that mermaids lured sailors into the water to drown them, that great sea serpents attacked ships, and that the sea was a place of danger. In reality, no one had completely explored the oceans, and humanity has always feared the unknown, avoiding deeper exploration out of fear of being hurt or killed by what might lurk below (sea monsters). Today, we know more about these oceans and the creatures that live within them: some species are strange, but all known ones are harmless to humans living on the Earth’s surface above the water (mermaids do not exist), while others even dream of underwater homes… Would you like to live in Atlantis?
Mermaid fan
I'm both on the human side and the fish side, but in reality there are two different mermaids. If you like mermaids, there's a show on Netflix for kids called Maco's Mermaids and another called H2O: they talk about what it means to be a human or a mermaid. It might seem strange at first when someone recommends watching these two shows together because they talk about the same things but in slightly different ways. However, I recommend watching them from start to finish! In my opinion, Maco's Mermaids is better than H20.
