Easy Mermaid Drawing
If you’re starting from scratch, a great way to practice drawing is tracing! Tracing helps train both your hands and yourself in the movements. Many creators of silicone mermaid tails provide outlines of a tail or allow you to color and customize the colors that stand out—perfect for practicing what comes next!
Here are some examples of Aquamermaid tail designs:

You should also print a picture of your favorite mermaid—real or fictional! The mermaid princess Ariel, a Disney icon, has an easy-to-trace design, and there are tons of options to choose from. Check out this template we found on Google by simply typing “mermaid template” into the search bar!

Next, try drawing. Just like tracing, this will help develop the muscles in your hand and also add more depth and detail to your work. A mermaid sketch involves drawing free lines to create shapes or images, like doodles or scribbles. It’s intentionally messy because it’s meant to be chaotic! In reality, sketching focuses on soft lines that are scratched together rather than sharp lines that give an impression of depth.

This is the first step, what you write as a draft of your art. It takes practice to draw and create anything! We encourage you to experiment with different tail patterns, hairstyles, body proportions, and more! If this isn’t enough to give you an idea of what you might look like, try using some of your old tracing templates as references; the amazing drawings from Mertailor are perfect examples! Just use your eyes to follow the lines.

Once you have these guidelines, follow them to create your own mermaid tail! Keep the sketch in mind—don’t be afraid to use multiple lines and shapes that might come out of nowhere. Don’t give up if your drawing isn’t perfect at first—over time and with practice, drawing mermaids will become second nature! A great source of inspiration is watching artists on YouTube.
